Sussex Wildlife Trust opened its nature reserve at Woods Mill, Henfield, 50 years ago (8  June , 1968) and now, thanks to Southern Transit – one of Sussex’s leading, and last remaining, independently run bus and coach companies -  special branded buses are in service encouraging people to ‘get closer to nature’.

Their Route 3 service (on Thursdays and Saturdays) provides an essential link between Shoreham and Horsham and the villages along the Adur Valley – one of the stops is outside Woods Mill nature reserve.  Three Southern Transit buses are servicing this route and each has stunning nature photography on one side and show different ways to enjoy the nature reserve on the other.

The family from Shoreham, featured on one of the buses, were photographed at Woods Mill earlier this year enjoying a walk at the nature reserve.  They came to wave ‘their bus’ off as it left the Holmbush Centre at Shoreham on its way to Horsham town centre.

Thanks to generous support from ScottishPower Foundation, Sussex Wildlife Trust is celebrating 50 years of inspiring and educating visitors with a host of free activities from August  through to March 2019. Thanks to their donation, more people will learn about wildlife and be inspired to take action to protect species and habitats for the next generation.

Leading the programme of events is Woods Mill Engagement Officer, James Duncan. He said, ‘Why not join one of our wildlife walks and talks and get closer to nature at Woods Mill? Maybe join in a family pond dipping session, a bat watching evening, or come and watch us open one of our moth traps to reveal the fabulous moths that fly during the night but are seldom seen.

‘Our events to celebrate the 50th anniversary are free of charge but numbers on each event are limited to ensure those attending get the best wildlife experience possible.  Please do book your place via our website where all 50th anniversary events are listed as ‘Woods Mill 50’.
