As part of the fundraising appeal for the new Discovery Centre, supporters can now contribute by buying a Golden Plover which will be part of a frieze designed by Bob Greenhalf, one of the country's leading wildlife artists, to be displayed in the new building. The frieze will depict a flock of flying Golden Plovers, a spectacular and special feature of the nature reserve which can be seen each year from September to late March. Every donation of £500 or more buys a bird in your name (or the name of a loved one) which will be acknowledged in the new Centre. The donors will also be thanked in the Rye Harbour Discovery Centre section of the Sussex Wildlife Trust website.
We have chosen the golden plover because of its distinctive appearance and increasing numbers at the reserve in recent years. This has been achieved through careful habitat management and implementing conservation measures such as raising water level, creating islands, building fences and a team of voluntary wardens.
We hope that many supporters of the reserve will wish to help us build the Discovery Centre – and a permanent visual flock of golden plovers - in this way.
